Just in case you are too young to know the classic song by Jerry Garia and The Grateful Dead, here it is:
This article is for anyone who drives a lot or run companies with drivers.
Do you travel a lot in an RV?
Are you a long-haul trucker?
Do you drive for a car service?
Do you drive for a courier company?
Do you manage a company that hires drivers?
Then you will be interested in things like good health, alertness, healthy sleep, endurance and stamina for you and your drivers .
You are in the right place.
I’ve Been Everywhere Man
Hey, that’s another song!
My persona story is that I have driven a lot!
I travelled by car or RV to nine Canadian provinces, two Canadian territories, and something like 44 US states. Much of Ireland too.
I drove for a town car service doing small trips in the Vancouver area.
I also worked for a courier company doing package deliveries in the Okanagan or driving shuttle trucks to Sicamous, Kamloops, Greenwood, and Merritt.
Bonnie and I drove from Vancouver BC, to Delray Beach Florida in an RV shortly after we got hitched.
Fatigue
Fatigue is the greatest hazard to drivers. It is why the safety features of new vehicles and self-driving vehicles will make the roads safer.
I love to drive and have gone on long trips as a form of meditation.
However, if I have not driven much recently, I don’t get far the first day without stopping to have a nap.
Many decades ago I tried fueling my trip to California with no-doze tablets and coffee.
By the time I going through Oregon my whole body was vibrating.
Bad idea!
Eventually I get into a rhythm of driving with frequent stops to rest, and driving through the night if fresh.
You can’t do that if you are on a tight schedule as with professional driving.
Healthy Suggestions
There are a few things you can do to make you a better road warrior:
- Get better sleep.
Although you could have some health issues that interfere with good sleep, chances are that habits like staying up watching TV or drinking coffee or alcohol in the evening do not help. - Get more exercise.
The problem with driving is that you are sitting on the job. If your only exercise is walking from the vehicle to the diner, you are in trouble. And if you find yourself parking as close to the diner as possible, you are in big trouble! - Eat better.
Eat more fruits and vegetables. Have drinks than coffee and beer. Use organic ingredients. Eat balanced meals. - Health supplements.
While definitely skip the reds and cocaine, vitamin C is a good idea. Vitamins and supplements can help.

Hydration
Most of us do not drink enough water. Drinking more fluids can help maintain body health and enable any of the remedies suggested here be more effective.
Coffee, tea, juices, beer, and wine do count as sources of water, though pure water or sparkling water are better choices.
I don’t see the point of Coors Lite, but that is for another discussion. Drink what you like:-)
Delays, crashes, and sick days are very costly to a company.
Bonnie and I would be happy to talk about products and the opportunity to help you and your team be Healthy Wealthy Road Warriors.
